Living with Deer in the Hill Country
The Texas Hill Country is home to one of the densest white-tailed deer populations in the country. While beautiful to watch, deer can devastate a new landscape overnight. The good news: many of our most beautiful native species are also the ones deer tend to leave alone.
Texas Mountain Laurels are toxic to deer and produce gorgeous purple flower clusters. Cenizo (Texas Sage) has aromatic foliage that deer avoid and blooms profusely after summer rains. Flame Acanthus provides brilliant red-orange flowers that attract hummingbirds while deer walk right past.
For shade trees, Cedar Elms and Mexican Buckeyes are rarely browsed by deer. Agarito and Yaupon Holly make excellent deer-resistant hedges and foundation plantings.
Keep in mind that no plant is 100% deer proof -- a hungry enough deer will eat almost anything. But these species are the least preferred by deer in our region and give you the best chance of a beautiful, intact landscape. We can help you design a complete deer-resistant planting plan for your property.
